Dream Interpretation

Example of a dream this dreamer titled: "Shipwrecked":

'In this dream I am taking a scuba diving class. We are already in the water. I am concerned and anxious because I am very unfamiliar with the gear. I am afraid that we'll start going below the water before I've gotten the equipment ready. I believe that the other people in the class already know somewhat what they are doing, so I am 'behind.' There are between 5-10 others in the class. I never quite see the instructor. We all have instructions.

We are gearing up in the water. The water is neither cold nor warm. We are hovering around a partially submerged wreck of a submarine. We have strict instructions not to touch anything on or above the surface of the water. However, when we get into the sub, we are to freely explore. We have been told that we will see many dead bodies.

I notice that the others are anxious about this. I'm feeling calm, even though I know that it will be 'difficult' to 'face' the bodies. I even mention this to the others, hoping to ease their fears. I also express that I don't quite know why they have their fears.

We begin to go into the sub. It will be technically difficult considering that it is a shipwreck and everything won't be 'normal,' as usual.

(I have found in my dreams that water has represented my depression.)'

Interpretation:

In this dream the psyche is taking this woman down into the unconscious realm- she has said that the water represents her depression. Carl Jung often said that the archetypal meaning of the ocean is usually the unconscious. So she is preparing to enter an unfamiliar realm, one she doesn't quiet feel competent in. The gear represents the equipment (she is getting equipped 'gearing up' to go where she is instructed to go) and is needed to go into these unconscious depths, where she will be facing dead people- or dead parts of her self. Theoretically, all parts of a dream are parts of ourselves; often-unknown parts are amplified through situations, or people we may know in waking life. She has also been 'instructed' not to touch anything above the surface. This relates to her propensity to stay on the surface of things because she has not wanted to go into the depths where the pain of her past lies, in this case, in the motif of 'dead people.' But a part of her is saying it is okay, there is nothing to be afraid of. She was trying to 'ease the fears of the others.' This dream marked a shift in her. She felt ready to 'explore' and face the dead parts, lifeless parts of herself that she needed to come to terms with and work through.
